PE and School Sport

At Ravenscote we are committed to providing our pupils with 2 hours of high quality PE each week. As a school we follow the National Curriculum units of study include: Athletics, Invasion Games, Net & Wall Games, Striking & Fielding Games, Swimming, Gymnastics, Dance and Outdoor pursuits.

We provide a term of swimming in year 4. Lessons take place at a local swimming pool and are led by their team of swim coaches and supported by the class teachers. The aim is to provide a fun water based alternative physical activity while developing water confidence, stroke technique and an understanding of water safety.

As a school we value the importance of a healthy active lifestyle and have in place a comprehensive programme of Out of School Hours Sports Clubs led by Ravenscote staff and outside sports agency providers. This is complemented by an inter house Level 1 and inter school level 2 competition calendar, with some events leading to county finals – Level 3 Competitions. For Further information regarding School Sports Competitions please visit https://www.yourschoolgames.com/

Throughout the school day there are additional opportunities for physical activity for all pupils. Classes use the outdoor Daily Mile track on the field and can take active breaks on the Outdoor Gym equipment, low ropes trail and traversing climbing walls. Our team of year 6 Sports Leaders lead Physi-Fun games for the lower school during their lunch breaks.

Please see our Calendar and Club opportunities on offer at Ravenscote. We are looking to build upon these throughout the year and will update this information regularly.

Ravenscote Junior School PE and School Sport (PESS) Premium Funding

The government is providing additional funding to improve provision of physical education (PE) and sport in primary schools. This funding - provided jointly by the Departments for Education, Health and Culture, Media and Sport - will be allocated to primary school headteachers.

This funding is ring-fenced and therefore can only be spent on provision of PE and sport in schools.

Schools must spend the additional funding on improving their provision of PE and sport, but they will have the freedom to choose how they do this.

As a school we carry out an annual PESS audit to identify areas to utilise the annual funding and improve the quality of PESS provision.  This year we will be providing further CPD for teaching staff; embedding our Level 1, 2 & 3 competition programme; developing the current PE curriculum; building cross curricular links with PE; providing extensive sports club opportunities for pupils and working with PESS partners to deliver our School Sports Week.
